In 1997 the company “Bertelsmann Distribution” GmbH has constructed in Yaroslavl a Distributive Center to render services to population in subscription and delivery of books and other printed matter from publisher’s lists on the territory of the Russian Federation. At the same time the concern owns large share holding of OJSC “Yaroslavl Polygraph Industrial Complex” and carries out the modernization of this company.

“When we planned to construct a Distributive Center and establish a joint company with a Russian partner, we were looking for an appropriate place in Moscow and the Moscow Region. But then we were offered an object of construction in process in Yaroslavl. We were a bit surprised by this offer, but after visiting the city we understood that it is the place where such project can be quickly implemented. Our clients who receive books by post usually live in remote places of Russia, and Yaroslavl has advantageous geographical location – railway cars with books can go from Yaroslavl to every corner of the country. That is why we have chosen this city.

First contacts with the city and regional authorities were very positive – they welcomed us as potential western investors. They helped us and consulted on what tax remissions we could get. Actually I didn’t expect that, because I thought that maybe it is not important for the authorities that we are going to create 200-400 new working places, maybe they favoured larger enterprises, like the ones that worked in Soviet times. And I was mistaken. The local authorities have understood that it is a very important project for the city and the region. They helped us to receive agreements for construction, included us in investment programs, and granted us income tax breaks. And we constructed our Distributive center in unprecedented fast time period – in four months.

Altogether the concern Bertelsmann have invested in the economy of the Yaroslavl Region about 40 million Euros during these years.

I think that Yaroslavl and the Yaroslavl Region have a great potential for attraction of western investors.”

“In the recent years I in increasing frequency hear good words about the Yaroslavl Region from large investors, they describe it as a region attractive for investments. Such appraisals are a good sign. We plan construction of a number of assembling productions here. The 1000-year anniversary of such ancient and surprising city as Yaroslavl should become a really all-Russian event. This is a good marketing date for attraction of investors and promotion of Yaroslavl in Russia and abroad. The Ministry is ready to support to realization of preparation program to this celebration. I undertake an obligation to fully support attraction of business to the Yaroslavl Region, to present the Yaroslavl Region as a place to realize business projects for serious entrepreneurs”.
